Laws are the system of rules which a community, a country, and the world recognize as regulating the actions of its members, and may enforce by the imposition of penalties. We need laws that are fair and protect the rights of Earth and humanity. By the 22nd century BC, the ancient Sumerian ruler Ur-Nammu had formulated the first law code, which consisted of casuistic statements ("if … then ..."). Around 1760 BC, King Hammurabi further developed Babylonian law, by codifying and inscribing it in stone. In Greek mythology, Themis was the personification of divine or natural law, order, and justice. Her name means justice. She was worshipped as a goddess in Athens, and was also credited with wisdom, foresight, and prophecy. Her son's name, Prometheus, means "foresight".
CONSUMER LAW
- Consumer Notice is a consumer advocacy organization informing the public about the health and safety risks associated with defective products, environmental dangers, and other hazards. It presents legal options to those who have been injured through the fault of another person or entity. Collaborating with experts across the U.S., it makes trustworthy analyses of product recalls and emerging risks. Most people are unaware of the pollution that starts at home. To educate and support consumers looking to reduce their environmental footprint, they have created "A Consumer's Guide to Reducing Pollution." Their links to resources are free to use.
INTERNATIONAL LAW
- Stop Ecocide International "The rules of our world are laws, and they can be changed. Laws can restrict or they can enable. What matters is what they serve. Many of the laws in our world serve property - they are based on ownership. But imagine a law that has a higher moral authority… a law that puts people and planet first. Imagine a law that starts from first do no harm, that stops this dangerous game and takes us to a place of safety….” Polly Higgins, 2015
